DIRKIE BAARD FROM NAMIBIA WINS QUAD ROOF OF AFRICA

There is a new kid on the block – the Namibian quad racer, Dirkie Baard

(Race Nation Honda Windhoek) became the first non-South African racer to

win the Quad Roof of Africa in Lesotho. It was Baard’s second try and he

managed to add his name to the record books after one of the toughest Roof

of Africa events for quad racers.dirkie.jpg

Baard started the last day of the three day event in fourth place, 15 minutes

behind the leader, Brian Baragwanath (Competitive Edge HST Yamaha) who

was leading for almost the whole of the first day of the main race. Baragwanath

lost time with a puncture after the last fuel stop on the way to the finish and

when he got stuck, Baard overtook him to receive the chequered flag just

outside Roma in Lesotho.

The 20 year-old rider from Walvis Bay in Namibia is now living in South Africa

and fulfilled his lifelong dream – to win the Quad Roof of Africa. The 2009

event will go down in the history books as one of the most difficult races and

consisted of almost 590 kilometres in the mountains of Lesotho.

Baragwanath, who finished as the runner-up last year as well, had an almost

trouble-free event and was followed by another Honda-racer, Juan Coetzee

(Race Nation) who competed in his second Lesotho event. He experienced a

few flat tyres, got stuck and his Honda’s nerf-bars broke off, but the 19 year-

old Kinross rider persevered and rounded off the podium.

Two more youngsters added a Quad Roof of Africa finish to their short racing

careers – Enrico da Silva (Suzuki) and Chris Meyer (Salley’s Yamaha) both

competed for the second time in this event and walked away with good results.

They competed – like Baard, Baragwanath and Coetzee – in the Pro 450 Class.

Stefan Swanepoel (Quad Revolution Suzuki) was sixth and the winner of the

Open Class and was followed by the runner-up in this class, TJ Meyer

(Salley’s Yamaha).

The Meyer brothers were one of three sets of brothers who competed and

made it to the finish. Glen Loubser, who crashed early on Saturday morning,

and his brother, Vincent (Team Yamaha), who ran out of fuel and experienced

flat tyres, finished respectively eighth and ninth overall while Da Silva’s younger

brother, Mikhail (Suzuki) was 12th.

Baard’s younger brother, Phillipie, crashed during Thursday’s time-trail and was

the last quad racer in the national category to start the first day of the main race

on Friday. He rode consistent and except for a couple of flat tyres, he managed

a respectable 13th overall place.

Only 18 competitors completed the full race distance – Danie Coetzer

(KTM525XC), who competed in his fourth Lesotho event, rounded off the top

ten when he completed his first Roof of Africa. He was third in the Open Class.

Veteran racer, Paul Chomse (Yamaha) won the Senior Class and was 11th;

Clinton Petersen (Polaris Outlaw) was 14th and was followed by Willie du

Preez (Yamaha); Clive Crause (Jag Quad Racing Yamaha) who was second in

the Senior Class and 16th overall; Stuart Holder (Colven Nkomo Outsourcing

Yamaha) who managed to finish with a quad frame broken in three places and

Geoff Osche (Cornel de Villiers Racing Outlander) who played the role of the

Samaritan and had to tow a few competitors in the mountains with his four-

wheel drive Can-Am.

His 16 year-old team-mate, Reghardt Oosthuizen, who also competes in the

Junior National Off-road Championship, put on a magic performance to win the

Silver Challenge in his first Quad Roof of Africa attempt. He was followed by

Johan Human (Polaris Outlaw) and the first lady quad competitor – and most

probably the youngest lady to finish a Quad Roof of Africa – Elaine Roberts (Jet

Sport Can-Am).

The Master Class was won by Jurie Meyer (Competitive Edge HST Yamaha).

Dean Blom (KTM) was second and the 2009 Master Class winner, Milton

Thesen (Tractor World Polaris Quad Racing) was third after experiencing minor

mechanical problems. The family affair was rounded off by Swanepoel’s dad,

Peet (Yamaha) who finished seventh in the Master Class.

High profile racers who did not finish the race include the double-winner,

Leander Pienaar (Team Can-Am) who posted the fastest time after the 50km

time-trail and was third after the second day, but broke a wheel off on the last

day; his team-mate, Hendrik Potgieter, experienced electrical problems on the

second day and then crashed in a huge hole; another double-winner, Jacques

“Boesman” Struwig (Southern ATV Sandpalm Doors Suzuki) experienced

mechanical problems halfway through the last day and the 2004 winner,

Brendan Badenhorst (DCM Chrome AGA LG Red Bull KTM) suffered

numerous flat tyres, but was the second quad off the starting line on the last day

until he had to retire due to a hole in the engine casing.

The third round of the 2009 championship is the Timberland 400 (1 and 2 May)
in the Pietermaritzburg area.
