Round One of the SA National Off-road Championship for Motorcycles and Quads

POPULAR ERMELO TOYOTA 400 OFF-ROAD RACE PROMISES TO BE EXCITING SEASON OPENER

The Ermelo Toyota 400 rounded off the 2008 SA national off-road championship and is the season opener for the 2009 season, but if competitors thought that the route will be the same, they can expect a few surprises.

This Mpumalanga event, that was voted 2007 event of the year and was one of the most popular events during the 2008 season, will again be run in the Sheepmoore area outside Ermelo and will take place on Friday, 27 February and Saturday, 28 February 2009. Organised by MS2000 with major sponsorship and support from Ermelo Toyota, this event promises to be a season opener not to miss.

The 2009 national off-road championship will consist of only six events this year and every event will count towards the champioinship – in the past competitors who scored points at every event of the eight round championship, had to throw away their worst set of points.

Competitors who had been competing in the previous two Ermelo Toyota 400 races, will remember parts of the route, but the route for the 2009 event will be in the opposite direction than the previous year while a certain section has been done away with. The area has received lots of rain which has also changed the route dramatically and for all practical reasons, an all new route will await competitors.

Spectators will be treated by racing action from Friday (27 February) as motorcycle and quad riders competing in the national classes have to do a 60 kilometre time-trail that will determine the starting order and positions for the main race on Saturday (28 February). A detailed map that clearly indicates the spectator points, will be available from the race organisers’ headquarters at the De Rust guest house next to the N14 halfway between Ermelo and Piet Retief.

On Saturday the main race will start at 08h00 at De Rust where the finish as well as the central service point will be. The main race will consist of two loops – the 60 km and a 120 km loop – which the national competitors will have to complete twice each before they will receive the chequered flag. Motorycle and quad competitors will compete on different loops and will switch over so that riders in these two categories do not race on the same route at the same time.

According to Jimmy Loubser, businessman and owner of the Ermelo and Pongola Toyota branches as well as Loerie Toyota in George, local off-road enthusiasts are looking forward to welcoming the competitors, their crews and supporters. “Last year, almost 300 competitors entered the event and even more competitors are expected this year,” he said. “The Ermelo Toyota 400 will be presented for the third time and the amount of entries as well as the spectators and following have grown every year,” Loubser concluded.

“As always, the farmers whose land are being used for the route, together with the organisers and everyone who helps to make a success of the Ermelo Toyota 400, are putting in a huge amount of effort to ensure that the race will, once again, be a huge success,” Loubser, who is also the president of the MSA Off-road Commission for bikes and quads, said. “Without them, this race won’t be possible and we are grateful to the community for their support.”

This race will be ideal to see all the big names in action in both the motorcycle and the quad categories. And, as always, the activities will be rounded off by a sit-down dinner in the Ermelo Civic Centre on Saturday evening.
